Horse Gram Kattu (Rasam)

Horse Gram Kattu (Rasam)

Try this traditional Karnataka style rasam or Kattu using Horse gram. One can drink this like soup with little butter or ghee.

Horse gram is rich source of calcium amongst all the legumes.

It contains iron, folate and abundant protein content. Sprouted horse gram similar to other sprouts provides good protein, soluble digestive fiber and active enzymes.

Ingredients:

1. Hurali [Horse gram] 3 cups

2. Vaate huli/Lakoocha 1 tsp OR Tamarind grape size

3. Sambar powder 1 tsp

4. Dry red chilies 2

5. Garlic pod (minced) 3-4

6. Asafoetida pinch

7. Mustard seeds ¼ tsp

8. Curry leaves 1 strand

9. Water

10. Salt

11. Oil

Method:

1. Wash and soak hurali/horse gram in water overnight. Drain the water. [I prefer sprouted horse gram hence I keep them one more day to sprout]

2. Pressure cook the sprouted horse gram with salt and 5-6 cups water [horse gram takes more time to cook]. Filter the water and use this water(stock) to make ‘kattu’.

3. Take about half cup of cooked horse gram/hurali along with 1/4 cup water(stock) in a blender, add sambar powder and vaate huli/lakoocha. Blend into smooth.

4. Take the filtered water(stock) in a vessel and add the ground paste (step 3) mix well. Add salt. Let it boil.

5. Seasoning: Heat a tsp oil in a frying pan, add mustard seeds, asafoetida, dry red chilies, minced garlic and curry leaves. Pour this to boiling ‘hurali kattu’. Switch off the stove.

6. Now hurali kattu is ready, it smells great and tastes delicious, goes well with rice.

7. Make usali from rest of the cooked horse gram.

Ban on Body Building Supplement Creatine Monohydrate

Ban on Body Building Supplement Creatine Monohydrate

Few days back FSSAI officers in all Indian states and Union territories have been asked to stop sale of unlicensed sale of body building supplement Creatine Monohydrate a popular supplement used by body builders.

Creatine Monohydrate is being manufactured, imported and sold by many companies with or without FSSAI license number under various brand names and has occupied e-commerce business platforms. FSSAI has sent notices to prominent e-commerce sites – Flipkart, Homeshop18, Snapdeal and Amazon.

What is Creatine Monohydrate?

Creatine Monohydrate is one of the most popular supplements used by people looking to build lean muscle mass, maximize performance and increase strength. Increased Creatine in the muscle will increase the performance of athletes as it increases work capacity and improvement in training. Taking the supplement also increases lean body mass (FSSAI).

As per the reports this ingredient can cause kidney damage and other complications of health.

At present Creatine Monohydrate does not have a standard that is prescribed for its use under Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006. Food Business Operators that have valid licenses are selling the products that contain this ingredient and this act is illegal and unauthorized.

The substance is not banned by most body building or athletic organizations since its consumption is not considered doping. “We got several complaints that the supplement is being sold online and through Food Business Operators (FBOs) illegally, which increases the risk of duplicate or spurious product being passed on as well. We have served notices to several popular onlineshopping websites to remove supplements with this component,” said an FSSAI official.

As per the list released by FSSAI following FBOs are engaged in use of  Creatine Monohydrate:

  1. Creatine Monohydrate – M/s Farmcare India Pvt Ltd – distributor, marketer. wholesaler – license central Delhi
  2. Muscle Crea – manufactured by Sources Nutrasciences and marketed by World of Proteins – No Licence
  3. Creatine Monohydrate – manufactured by M/s Kudos Nutritious in-state license Rajasthan
  4. Micronized Creatine Powder – manufactured by M/s Advance Nutratech – state license Delhi
  5. Creatine Monohydrate – manufactured by Healthgenie India Pvt Ltd – state license Delhi
  6. Creatine Monohydrate – manufactured and marketed by M/s DF Pharmacy Ltd – Central and State license Mumbai
  7. Nurocore Pre- workout – manufactured by M/s Lovato health Sciences – imported by M/s MusclePro Nutrition Pvt Ltd – License Central Mumbai
  8. Micronized Creatine Powder – manufactured in the USA and imported by M/s Bright Commodities – License central Mumbai
  9. Muscle Blaze – manufactured at Twilight Litika Pharma Ltd. for M/s Bright Lifecare Pvt Ltd – license central Delhi
  10. Creatine Monohydrate – Imported by M/s Neulife Nutritious Systems Pvt Ltd – License central Mumbai
  11. Creatine Monohydrate – manufactured by M/s Wellness Q.E.D – Licence Central Delhi
  12. Crealyte – manufactured by Lactonova Nutripharm Pvt Ltd – Licence central Chennai
  13. 100% Creatine – manufactured by Mac3Pharma – state license Harayana

FDA officials from Maharashtra will soon act against FBOs to prevent illengal manufacturing and selling this ingredient.

Doctors and Body Building Associations has welcomed this move. This will help to win the battle against doping and illegal sale. As per Chetan Pathare, General Secretary of Indian Body Building Federation “We are against any kind of performance enhancer or supplement as body building isn’t strictly dependent on intake of supplements. The issue is that so-called popular companies sell the supplements by bribing trainers and make huge profits,”

Electric cars on Indian road by 2030

Electric cars on Indian road by 2030

A positive news for all Indians ! In recent years throughout the world the concept of electric car has come to spotlight due to rising pollution, fuel prices and global warming. Now it is India’s turn ! To reduce the air pollution and to bring a clean environment,  Indian Govt unveiled a plan to make every single care electric by 2030.

Pollution in India is a huge problem. It is having a huge impact on civilian’s health resulting more asthma, allergies and lung diseases. The toxicity level is very high in India – recent reports say that India has surpassed China in terms of air impurity levels. Present Central Govt of India has taken a decision to make every single car electric by the year 2030. Indian government has undertaken an initiative to cut down on carbon emissions to benefit the environment and populace.

India’s minister of state for power, coal, and new and renewable energy, Piyush Goyal, told attendees at an investment conference in Mumbai that Indian leaders are planning on making every car on the country’s roads electric by the year 2030, reports Clean Technica.

Considering India has surpassed China in terms of air toxicity levels, this is incredibly positive news.

To meet the goal, the government will be assisting the renewable automotive industry for the next two to three years, or until the market stabilizes. According to press reports, officials are adamant that electric cars will become more affordable options for consumers, as prices are driven down “by demand and not by subsidy.”

“We are going to introduce electric vehicles in a very big way. We are going to make electric vehicles self- sufficient like UJALA. The idea is that by 2030, not a single petrol or diesel car should be sold in the country,” Power minister Piyush Goyal said during an address at the CII Annual Session 2017.

The energy plan builds on a similar initiative launched by India’s capital territory of Delhi, in which the city announced plans to ban all diesel-powered vehicles from the roads by 2025. The campaign truly could not come at a better time. In 2025, Greenpeace released a report revealing that India has surpassed China’s air toxicity levels. Additionally, New Delhi is now the most polluting city on the planet.

“Through UJALA, the LED distribution programme, we have already seen about 500 million LED bulbs sold in the last two years. My job is to improve India’s energy efficiency to reduce consumption wherever it is wasteful and ensure that demand is met fully.”

Studies show that electric cars are far more beneficial for the environment and the public’s health than petrol or diesel-fueled vehicles. The United States has the most electric vehicles on the roads of any country. Between 2008 and December 2015, about 410,000 EVs were sold.

Do you know? There are two categories in electric cars: hybrid fuel and pure electric powered. We can opt whichever according to our requirements:

Hybrid cars Electric cars
Partially electric 100% electric
Can use ICE, if battery dries down Includes battery alone
Low emission vehicle Zero emission vehicle
Battery can be used up and recharged while driving Battery can be recharged only if plugged into power supply source
Expensive Less expensive
