Supplements rich in antioxidants

Supplements rich with antioxidants

Supplements do supply antioxidants! Even though eating fruits and vegetables provide good amount of antioxidant and needed ORAC units per day, not all foods available in all season. For this reason, some people prefer consuming supplements either in the form of powder, tablets or capsules. Antioxidant rich leaf powders such as Drumstick powder, Brahmi powder, Spirulina powder, Ashwagandha powder etc. are available in the market. One must make sure to get the supplements from reliable sources.

High ORAC vegetables and fruits can be found in condensed supplements form. These supplements are loaded with antioxidant rich phytochemicals to support optimal health. These are wonderful tools to get necessary ORAC units that our body needs. For older adults especially, these supplements are helpful as they have limited mobility and find it hard to get meals ready. Adding powder in smoothies or water helps them to get necessary antioxidants. For youngsters consuming fresh fruits and vegetables are best option to get the needed ORAC units.

Include spices & condiments in your diet

Spices and condiments are part of our daily meals. A dash of spice changes the taste and smell of the food. In Indian and Mexican foods, including spices play major role in enhancing flavor, fragrance and taste. Do you know, our ancient texts talk about the benefits of spices and condiments to treat several diseases?

Lately, researchers are stressing on immunomodulatory effects of both spices and condiments. Ministry of Ayush, India and WHO recommends adding spices in foods to get benefits of antioxidants to prevent viral and bacterial infections. ORAC value in clove for example is highest. Similarly grounded cinnamon powder also has high ORAC value. Clove contains acetyl eugenol, beta caryophyllene, methyl salicylate and other tannins and minerals. These compounds help to reduce oxidative stress that is responsible for chronic disease. Researchers say that clove can protect from cancer, kill bacteria, improve liver health and can regulate blood sugar.

Cinnamon similarly is rich with cinnamic aldehyde, and cinnamaldehyde and, other antioxidants. It is good for keeping cholesterol level at bay. It is anticoagulant, controls blood sugar level, supports heart health and good for arthritis. Other spices and condiments that are present in kitchen cabinets supply necessary antioxidants and ORAC value that are needed for our health.

Plants amongst us

What makes them unique? Plants amongst us

We often use plants for medicinal purposes. Almost all home remedies are derived from plants. Our dependency on plants are increasing with awareness about side effects of modern medicines. How and why plants exhibit medicinal values?

Medicinal plants have been identified and used throughout human history. Plants have the ability to synthesize a wide variety of chemical compounds that are used to perform important biological functions, and to defend against attack from predators such as insects, fungi and herbivorous mammals. At least 12,000 such compounds have been isolated so far; a number estimated to be less than 10% of the total (Wikipedia). We are familiar with plants but what we do not know is ” plants are constantly working”. Their hard work gives us food, medicine and a beautiful nature.  Most of the plants on earth are known to have medicinal properties. The unique nature of each plant is because of the unique compound present in them. Here are few examples of well known plants and their unique properties.

Roses:

Roses

Roses are popular in the world. Rosa damascena mill L., known as Gole Mohammadi in is one of the most important species of Rosaceae family flowers. R. damascena is an ornamental plant and beside perfuming effect, several pharmacological properties including anti-HIV, antibacterial, antioxidant, antitussive, hypnotic, antidiabetic, and relaxant effect on tracheal chains have been reported for this plant. The medicinal functions of Rosaceae  are partly attributed to their abundance of phenolics compound. Phenolics possess a wide range of pharmacological activities, such as antioxidants, free-radical scavengers, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and antidepressant. Hydrosol is nothing but the rose oil that has many commercial uses.

Gloriosa superba (Flame lily)

Flame Lily

Gloriosa superba is a species of flowering plant in the family Colchicaceae. This plant is poisonous, toxic enough to cause human and animal fatalities if ingested. Every part of the plant is poisonous, especially the tuberous rhizomes. The alkaloid-rich plant has long been used as a traditional medicine in many cultures. It has been used in the treatment of gout, infertility, open wounds, snakebite, ulcers, arthritis, cholera, colic, kidney problems, typhus, itching, leprosy, bruises, sprains, hemorrhoids, cancer, impotence, nocturnal emission, smallpox, sexually transmitted diseases, and many types of internal parasites. It is an anthelmintic. As with other members of the Colchicaceae, this plant contains high levels of colchicine, a toxic alkaloid. It also contains the alkaloid gloriocine.

Incomparable Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) Holy basil

Incomparable Tulsi

Holy basil is a plant. It is originally from India and is used in Ayurvedic medicine as an “adaptogen” to counter life’s stresses. It is considered a sacred plant by the Hindus and is often planted around Hindu shrines. The Hindu name for holy basil, Tulsi, means “the incomparable one.” Medicine is made from the leaves, stems, and seeds. Holy basil is used for the common cold, influenza (“the flu”), H1N1 (swine) flu, diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, earache, headache, stomach upset, heart disease, fever, viral hepatitis, malaria, stress, and tuberculosis. It is also used for mercury poisoning, to promote longevity, as a mosquito repellent, and to counteract snake and scorpion bites. Holy basil is applied to the skin for ringworm. Chemicals in holy basil are thought to decrease pain and swelling (inflammation). Other chemicals might lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. There is interest in using holy basil seed oil for cancer. Beginning research suggests that the oil can slow progression and improve survival rate in animals with certain types of cancer. Researchers think this benefit may be explained by the oil’s ability to act as an antioxidant. Tulsi is onsidered as a tonic to retain youth and avoid aging. Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Phytonutrients and the essential oils in Tulsi, are excellent anti oxidants and protects the body from nearly all the damages caused by the free radicals.  Tulsi reduces blood glucose levels. Thus it is useful for diabetics. Tulsi contains vitamin C and other anti oxidants (such as Eugenol), which protect the heart from harmful effects of free radicals.

Catharanthus roseus (Vinca rosea or Periwinkle) plant:

Periwinkle

Catharanthus roseus is a tropical plant used in traditional herbal medicine in regions of the world where it historically grows. Madagascar periwinkle, the common name of this medicinal and ornamental plant, indicates where the species originated. The plant contains dozens of alkaloids, including vinblastine, which was found to have anti-tumor properties. Medication made from this alkaloid is used to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an immune system cancer. A second alkaloid, vincristine, is utilized for treating leukemia in children. It has been credited with significantly improving the survival rate of victims of childhood leukemia. Indian Ayurvedic medicine and other traditional herbal systems use C. roseus for the treatment of diabetes. Insect stings are relieved using a juice from the leaves. Herbal use in the Caribbean includes using extracts from the flowers as an eyewash for infants. The flowers are also used for treating asthma and excess gas. Other traditional herbal treatments include using the plant for painful menstruation, tuberculosis and rheumatism.

Capsaicin is a remarkable health-promoting substance and capsaicin is  the compound that is responsible for the spicy sensation associated with eating a hot pepper. The spicier the pepper is, the more capsaicin it contains. The Scoville Heat Unit scale, which measures capsaicin content from 0 to 15,000,000 Scoville Heat Units, or SHUs, of pure capsaicin, places green chilis between 500 and 2,500 SHUs. The American Institute for Cancer Research reports that eating rich capsaicin sources like green chili peppers may help inhibit the growth of cancer cells, though more research is needed.

Henna natural hair dye

Find out why henna is good for your hair

Henna plant is easy to grow, easy to maintain and it nourishes your skin and hair very well. If available and possible then grow henna plant at home. In India, Egypt, Morocco and other Asian subcontinents henna is used for various purposes. Henna is known for its unique color. Henna art also known as mehendi is popular art. Henna is used as for coloring hair from centuries. Henna is a natural hair dye and it is one of the best natural hair dye one use safely on hair.

Henna leaves contain coloring pigment called Lawsone that is responsible for the dark reddish orange color. When the leaves are crushed, this natural dye releases. After applying to skin, nail and hair, the color can last longtime because the lawsone molecules safely bind to the proteins present in skin and hair and darkens within 48 hours as it absorbed and binds to more proteins.  This phytonutrient present in henna helps in recovery of skin and nail texture as well as gives a proper conditioning to hair.

Henna’s application as hair dye prevails from more than 6000 years. The reason for its popularity is because of its unique nature that supports hair.

Hair dyes available in the market might have oil or some other ingredients that can attract us. However, using chemical dye for longtime can destroy our hair. If you have henna plant (Lawsonia inermis) at home, you can grind the leaves and apply on hair to get its benefits. Henna leaf powder (must be pure) available in markets can be used as hair dye. When it is mixed with water, the lawsone molecule will become active and releases the stain that naturally colors hair and skin without causing any reactions. There are different ways to prepare and apply henna on hair.

  1. If available one can collect fresh henna leaves, grind and apply on hair. Grind the leaves previous night, add half tsp sesame oil and one tsp lemon juice, mix and keep it overnight. Apply this on hair next day morning, leave it for couple of hours and wash hair.
  2. If you are using henna powder, mix one cup henna powder with hair oil, lemon juice, 2 tsp amla – Indian gooseberry powder (1 tsp each) and to this add tea water (boil one and half tsp tea in one cup water -strain and use tea water) . Mix well and keep overnight in stainless steel vessel. Apply the paste next day, leave it for 2 hours and wash hair.
  3. You can mix henna powder, amla powder and one Tbsp beetroot juice with tea water and apply on hair.

While applying, divide hair into four section – back, front, left and right. Wear gloves, scoop and apply henna paste from scalp, root of hair to evenly on entire length of hair on all four sides. After applying henna, you can cover head with hair cap. Leave it for two hours, rinse henna. Avoid shampooing and artificial conditioner.

Benefits of applying henna are:

  1. It is natural hair color and does not have any added chemical.
  2. Generally, natural henna does not cause any allergy (test your skin before applying). It is safer than chemical hair dye.
  3. It provides good conditioning to hair and hair looks flawless. It repairs hair during the color treatment. It detoxes scalp and hair roots. Lawsone restructures the hair proteins well.
  4. You can treat hair with henna as many times as you want.
  5. It prevents hair loss
  6. Covers gray hair naturally.
  7. After application, henna will leave your hair silky, soft and luxurious.
  8. Prevents split hair
  9. Henna prevents head lice and dandruff
  10. It provides suitable color for hair, makes it resists weathering.
  11. Henna application is an easy DIY dye job and can be done as per your wish and at your own time. You can also seek professional help if you want to.

The cons of using henna is, while applying if not handled proper it can be messy. And for those who do not follow instructions, it could be a bit tedious process. If you are fond of varieties of hair colors, then henna is not for you! Beware of artificial henna -like black henna and henna powder that contains slats and chemical lighteners that can damage hair and react with skin causing allergy.

If you have henna plant and trusted source of henna powder, then use henna to grow and maintain your beautiful hair.

Sweater cleaning tips

How to take care of sweaters

Soon fall will followed by winter season. Are you ready to face cold weather? If you are not already, then get ready with sweaters that you might want to wear in the cold seasons. How to clean and get ready with your favorite sweater? Here are few tips.

Winter time we wear sweaters  and sweaters needs cleaning. It is an effort but is worth effort. Sweaters need special attention because after wearing couple of times they tend to look old and dirty. Cleaning sweater is easy.

How to take care of sweaters ?

Fold sweaters: Never hand sweaters. Hanging will not only spoil shape also will stretch the length.

Remove hair, dandruff, and lint: Using soft hairbrush (baby hairbrush will do), softly brush on sweater to remove unwanted particles sitting on sweater. It makes sweater attractive and gives fresh look.

Change sweater alternate days: Wearing same sweater everyday will add perspiration, stain and sweater will lose its shape. If affordable buy couple of sweaters and wear alternate days.

Wash by hands: Most sweaters need hand wash unless it is given in the instruction. Read instruction carefully. Generally, it is recommended to wash sweaters ever four wears unless there is heavy stain, spill or sweat.  Use lukewarm or cool water with gentle soap water to wash. Fill bucket with water and add soap. Using cool water helps to keep the color and embroideries intact. Let sweater soak for 15 mins. Turn sweater inside out and using both hands slowly rinse sweater. Do not wring sweater as it spoils shape. Gently squeeze and place it on a dry towel to remove excess water. Dry on clean towel placing it flat.  Stretched sweaters can be put in dryer on high heat to bring back to original size.

  • Cashmere sweaters: Wash using hands. Avoid dry cleaning
  • Cotton sweater: Use gentle cycle to wash cotton material and air dry to keep shape. If the sweater is more fragile then, wash using hands.
  • Wool: Wool sweaters can be washing using washing machines. Use gentle cycle and cool water. Dry properly, if not wool will give odd odor.
  • Chenille sweater: Never use washing machine

How to remove lint: All types of sweaters will give up lint based on the fabric type. To remove lint, use a simple razor or a manual pill remover.

How to remove itchiness from sweater? Use liquid fabric softener and rinse thoroughly in cool water.

Using steam to remove wrinkles: When sweater is dry, gently steam to remove wrinkles.

Storing sweater: Fold sweaters properly and stack them. Do not keep any strong chemicals near sweater. Store sweaters after drying, do not store damp sweater. Damp sweater can attract moth and fungus – both will spoil fabric. To preserve sweater shape keep them folded in drawers or shelves. You can fold and place on hanger but do not hang. During summer use breathable clothing bags or boxes to store. This will help to avoid growth of mildew.
