Virus Causing Babies to Have Small Heads Making Way to US; Countries Say Don’t Get Pregnant

Virus Causing Babies to Have Small Heads Making Way to US; Countries Say Don’t Get Pregnant

By: Claire Bernish at www.trueactivist.com

Strongly suspected to cause microcephaly, a fetal condition causing infants to be born with severe brain damage and smaller heads than normal, Zika virus has been predicted to spread through every nation in the two American continents — except Canada and Chile. Zika seems the likely culprit for Guillain-Barré syndrome, as well, which can lead to paralysis.

The World Health Organization stated the virus might spread so widely because the population across the two continents has not previously been exposed, and therefore lacks immunity; and because “Aedes mosquitoes — the main vector for Zika transmission — are present in all the region’s countries except Canada and continental Chile.” According to a statement, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) “anticipates that Zika virus will continue to spread and will likely reach all countries and territories of the region where Aedes mosquitoes are found.”

Since October, nearly 4,000 cases of microcephaly have been reported in Brazil, which is considered the epicenter of the Zika outbreak. “[M]ore than 1 million people have contracted the virus” there, reported the Washington Post. Brazil, El Salvador, Jamaica, and Colombia are now urging women to forego pregnancy for up to two years as a cautionary measure against the virus.

“The recommendation is that people plan their pregnancies, that they avoid if at all possible to have babies this year,” said El Salvador Deputy of Health Vice Minister Eduardo Espinoza in an interview. “This is the first time that we have suffered an attack of Zika virus, and the first attack is always the worst … If we don’t make any recommendations to the population, we could have a high incidence of microcephaly. Of those children, 99 percent will survive, but with limitations in their mental faculties.”

Zika is transmitted almost exclusively by the Aedes mosquito, which is most active during daylight hours. Nevertheless, blood transmission and one possible case of sexual transmission have been documented.Officials havewarned those in affected areas to protect themselves against the aggressive mosquitoes by employing insect repellent, wearing clothing that covers as much of the body as possible (preferably in light colors), and by keeping windows and doors closed and using mosquito nets.

“Mosquito populations should be reduced and controlled by eliminating breeding sites,” said the PAHO statement. “Containers that can hold even small amounts of water where mosquitoes can breed, such as buckets, flower pots, or tires, should be emptied, cleaned, or covered to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in them. This will also help prevent dengue and chikungunya, which are also transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes.”

On Thursday, the Public Health England website reported that “three cases associated with travel to Colombia, Suriname, and Guyana have been diagnosed in U.K. travelers” as of January 18, though it emphasized Zika “does not occur naturally in the U.K.”

Zika-virus: As of Sunday, the list of countries that have confirmed cases of Zika virus and for which the CDC has issued a travel precaution are Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guinea, Guatemala, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Samoa, Suriname, and Venezuela.

Maggi Ban

MAGGI BAN: Maggi going off the shelves – Which are some alternative healthy foods?

Lead and MSG contents in Maggi?  Yes, Indian food inspectors have directed Nestle India to call back their recently manufactured batch of Maggi noodles from the shops across the nation stating that it contains dangerous levels of lead. Apart from lead, Maggi also known to have an artificial, flavor namely MSG or Monosodium glutamate. It is a flavor enhancer commonly added to Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. Even though use of MSG claims to be safe from food industry it is not so. As told by Vijay Bahadur Yadav, FSDA Assistant Commissioner to Times Of India, “We have tested Maggi samples at Kolkata’s referral laboratory. The test results show that there are added monosodium glutamate and excess of lead. We have ordered further sampling.”

Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) of UttarPradesh announced the presence of high level of lead while testing two dozen packets of Nestle Maggi noodles. Lead concentration found during the tests was recorded as 17.2 parts per million which is seven times above the permissible limit i.e. .01 ppm to 2.5 ppm.

Is MSG harmful for your health?

There is still a debate on whether MSG is harmful for health or not as there are still no proven results but yes, there have been reports of people complaining of headaches, nausea, upset digestive system after consumption of foods containing MSG.

Is lead is harmful?

Of course, lead is harmful and can cause damage to body in various ways: Lead interferes with a variety of body processes and is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems. It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is therefore particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. Symptoms include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability, and in severe cases seizures, coma, and death.

If Maggie is banned what are the alternative healthy food?

A staple food among students, hostel residents, people away from home and lazy cooks, it has come to the point that many cite their cooking ability as being able to make Maggi. A number of people have taken the Maggi ban as a call to stock up supplies of their favorite snack just as one would during a zombie apocalypse.

People are worried that what are the alternate food one can prepare in in few minutes if the Maggi is banned? Below are some healthy foods one can prepare in few minutes or which can be alternatives to maggi

  1. Bread upma: All you need is some fluffy pav or bread and you are all set to kill the hunger. Add onion, chilies, and peanuts to little oil, put pieces of pav or bread, and mix it with little salt. Cooking time: 7 minutes.
  2. Chana Masala: Boil chickpeas, preferably black chickpeas and add some onions, chat masala, tomatoes and chilly. Chana masala is a very healthy alternative to fast food. Eat with pav or bread: Cooking time: 10-15 minutes.
  3. Khichdi : One of the most nutritious food is our own old Indian Khichdi. Moong dal khichdi, made in ghee, is a healthy, comfort food. It will take more time than Maggi, but it will definitely will satisfy your hunger and pleases your mother too. Cooking time : 10-12 minutes.
  4. Oats Chilla: A chilla is a good way to introduce oats in your diet. All you have to do is replace the besan batter with crushed oats and semolina. In a bowl mix oats, curd and semolina together. If the consistency is very thick, add some more curd. Let it sit for a while. Add all other ingredients and mix well. On a non -stick pan, line it with some oil, after the pan is hot, and pour the batter to form a pancake. Cover with lid. Let the chilla cook for 2-3 minutes on medium flame. When you open the lid, you will see that the chilla had risen a bit. Now carefully turn the chilla upside down and let it become golden brown. If necessary add oil on both sides. Remember, this chilla will be a little soft, thus, you will need to turn it around carefully. Cooking time: 10-12 minutes.
  5. Omelets: There is nothing like a good old omelets to keep hunger at bay. How you make it? Watch bollywood movie “Kaho na pyar hai” and Hrithik will teach you! Cooking time: 5-10 minutes.

Watch what you eat

When you are traveling in India, watch what you eat

1. Eat where the locals eat

In India the best indicator for safe food is a big crowd waiting in front of a food stall to take their turn for a delicious steaming hot snack or dish. Make sure that wherever you eat most tables are occupied with locals – it doesn’t matter if the place looks not so fancy or even a bit grim – Indians are used to great food at home, so having satisfied customers filling the restaurant up is the best indicator that great food is waiting for you.

2. Eat what the locals eat

Eat Indian – it is like when you are in Rome be a Roman. No matter how tempting the menu will sound or how much you might be missing a certain dish from home, do not try to eat something that is not familiar for you and furthermore a dish might be depending on imported ingredients and would less fresh.

3. Stay veggie

Be careful if you are a non-vegetarian. Many times eating non -veg food can cause sickness. Go Veggie. Order for fresh food. Be familiar about locally grown vegetables. Do your homework and get to know about the place before visiting the place. Eat in a vegetarian restaurant that serves hot veggie dishes.

4. Go east with spicy and oily food

Avoid spicy food.  When you are traveling due to variation in climate (hot and cold) body may has to acclimatize. Eating too much spicy food may still result in gastroenteritis. Try to slowly pick up when it comes to spices or even oily food.

5. Peel and eat

Eat cooked food. If you are having fruits, wash them and peel and eat. Do not eat cucumber that is available on road side or tomatoes as such. Wash and then eat. Do not drink juice on road side or in small stalls. Enquire and confirm about the filter water they might be using. Better is drinking coconut water. Coconut water is safe and good for health.

6. Have a family dining:

If you have friends and families in the area where you are visiting make sure to dine at their house. Don’t forget to inform them and take gifts. It is always good to have home food while traveling. This a real treat and reflects the Indian proverb that “guest is god”.  But do not over eat.

7. Using your hands

Use your hand to eat food. This can actually be more hygienic than using utensils because you know where your hands have been and whether or not they’re clean. Plates and utensils at restaurants are often times not clean even though they may appear to be because they have been wiped with a dirty dish cloth.  Sometimes the spoons and forks are just dipped in hot water and if you observe they may not be clean at all.

8. Carry hand sanitizer and water

Always carry a bottle of hand sanitizer to clean your hands. And carry bottled water or water from home. This will reduce the risk of getting infected by non-hygenic means and unknown (source) water.

Uterine Fibroid Pain Relief

Uterine Fibroid Pain Relief

Fibroids, also called uterine leiomyomas, are extremely common non-cancerous muscular tumors of the uterus. About 80 percent of women develop this problem by the age of 50. Most women with fibroids have no symptoms. However, some women experience symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual periods, pelvic pressure and pain, bladder problems, rectal pressure and lower back pain. Uterine fibroids are usually not dangerous, but can cause immense discomfort and lead to complications like anemia from heavy blood loss. In rare cases, they may cause complications that affect pregnancy. Each month, your uterus goes through a cycle: It creates a thickened inner lining in case a pregnancy occurs. If pregnancy does not occur, your body sheds that lining — this is your period. However, if you have fibroids within the uterine wall, or fibroids that protrude into the uterine cavity, more surface area is created. Consequently there is more thickened lining to shed when during your period. It is not the size but the location of the fibroid, or fibroids, that has the most impact.

Types of Uterine Fibroids

  • Submucosal: grow in the innermost layer of the uterus
  • Intramural: grow in the middle layer of the uterus
  • Subserosal: grow in the outer wall of the uterus
  • Pedunculated: attached to a stalk either outside of the uterus or within the uterine cavity
  • Cervical: in the cervical tissue
  • Interligamentous: between the uterine broad ligaments

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

While many women will never even know that they have uterine fibroids, because the condition often exhibits no symptoms, there are some women that will experience certain effects from the fibroid’s presence. Symptoms of uterine fibroids include:

  • A sensation of fullness or pressure in the abdominal area
  • Excessive bleeding during menstruation
  • Excessive length of menstruation
  • Extreme cramping during menstruation
  • Lower back pain
  • Painful intercourse
  • A frequent urge to urinate

Some home remedies to overcome fibroid pains are below:

Dandelion Root & Leaf

This plant provides excellent liver support for improved hormonal balance. Dandelion leaf is very nourishing to the body, being high in vitamins and minerals. The root aids in liver health, and stimulates digestion for improved estrogen metabolism.

Garlic cloves have compounds that help to slow down the growth of fibroids. It is enriched with powerful antioxidants that make it a good friend that boosts the immune system of people.

Ginger Root

A wonderful herb used to increase circulation and promote blood flow to the uterus. The increased circulation also helps to reduce inflammation of the uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes.

Black Cohosh root

This root promotes regulation of the entire menstrual cycle. For women with a uterus that feels inflamed or irritated throughout the month, Black cohosh may be an effective option in relaxing the uterus by helping to reduce inflammation.

Red Raspberry Leaf

Raspberry leaf works to tone the uterine muscles and normalize blood flow during menses. This is one of the best normalizing herbs for the female reproductive organs. Raspberry leaf is astringent, contracting and shrinking internal and external body tissues. It may help prevent hemorrhage due to excessive bleeding and is one of the best herbs for uterine health.

Dong Quai root

Dong Quai increases circulation, which helps to bring in fresh healthy blood to remove excess tissue growth, heal tissue damage, as well as limit scar tissue and adhesion formation. Healthy circulation ensures healthy natural cleansing of the body as well. Proper circulation is required to remove toxins, dead tissue, diseased tissue, and metabolic waste from our bodies. This is very important for women with uterine fibroids.

Maitake Mushroom

This mushroom has been shown to enhance immune system function, to be effective at reducing tumors and improving glucose metabolism.

Self Fertility Massage

  • Chili powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Salt – ½ teaspoon
  • Water – as required
  • Butter/oil or clarified butter

Preparation

  • Chop coriander leaves into small pieces. Keep aside.
  • To begin making the coriander parathas, combine all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Add a little water at a time and knead to make a firm and smooth dough. Drizzle a teaspoon of oil over the dough and knead for a couple of minutes until the dough is smooth.
  • Keep the dough covered in a bowl for at least 10 minutes before you can start making the paratha.
