Cholesterol Levels in Children: Normal Ranges, Risks and Nutrition
Cholesterol is often considered an adult health concern, but children can also have high cholesterol levels. Although cholesterol is essential for normal growth and development, excessive levels, particularly LDL or “bad” cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease later in life.
Unhealthy eating habits, obesity, physical inactivity, certain medical conditions and inherited disorders can contribute to high cholesterol in children. Understanding cholesterol levels and establishing healthy eating habits early can help protect children’s long-term cardiovascular health.
Cholesterol management is an important part of children’s long-term health. Although cholesterol is essential for growth, persistently elevated LDL cholesterol can increase cardiovascular risk over time.
