  3. Stimulating appetite and digestion: The strong aromatic compounds in asafoetida are traditionally considered digestive aids.
  4. Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties: Chemical constituents in hing believe to help in reducing infection.

How to prepare and consume hing water? There are different ways to prepare hing water and it is based on the condition.

Plain hing lemon water: For easy digestion drinking this helps.

Method

  1. Boil 1 cup of water.
  2. Turn off the heat and add a small pinch of hing.
  3. Stir well and allow it to cool until comfortably warm.
  4. Drink slowly.

You can also mix the hing into warm water without boiling, but use only a very small amount because hing has a strong flavor and can cause stomach irritation in some people.

Hing water for gas: Ajwain and hing are commonly used to ease gas, indigestion and abdominal discomfort.

Ingredients

  1. Warm water – 1 cup (200–250 ml)
  2. Hing – 1 small pinch
  3. Ajwain (carom seeds) – ¼ teaspoon
  4. Optional: Black salt – a tiny pinch

  1. Boil the water with ajwain for 3–5 minutes.
  2. Strain into a cup.
  3. Add the hing and optional black salt.

  2. Hing – 1 small pinch
  3. Cumin seeds – ½ teaspoon
  4. Lemon juice – ½ teaspoon, optional

Preparation

  1. Boil the cumin seeds in water for 3–5 minutes.
  2. Strain the water.
  3. Add the hing and lemon juice.
  4. Drink warm, preferably after a meal.

Hing water for mild constipation: For constipation, apart from using hing as remedy  consider drinking  adequate water, dietary fiber, fruits/vegetables and regular physical activity are generally more important.

Ingredients

  1. Warm water – 1 cup
  2. Hing – 1 very small pinch
  3. Fennel seeds (saunf) – ½ teaspoon
  4. Optional: Lemon juice – ½ teaspoon

Preparation

  1. Boil the fennel seeds in water for 5 minutes.
  2. Strain.
  3. Add the hing and optional lemon juice.
  4. Drink warm.

Keep hing to a tiny pinch. More is not better, and too much can cause nausea or stomach irritation. If constipation is frequent, persistent, or accompanied by blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss, it is best to consult a healthcare professional.

When to drink it?

If you are using it as a traditional digestive drink, after a meal or when experiencing mild gas/bloating is more sensible than treating it as a daily “detox” drink. There isn’t good evidence that hing water detoxifies the body or causes weight loss.

Avoid taking large amounts. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a bleeding disorder, or take regular medications, check with your healthcare professional before using concentrated amounts of asafetida. As with other herbal products, interactions are possible.
