Eating tomatoes offers a variety of health benefits due to their rich nutritional profile. Tomatoes are versatile fruits that are commonly used as vegetables in culinary contexts. They belong to the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and are native to South America. Originated in Andean region of South America, wild tomatoes are found throughout Peru, Ecuador also in Chile and Bolivia.

Fun Facts about tomato:

·         Botanical Classification: Though commonly thought of as vegetables, tomatoes are botanically fruits.

·         History: Tomatoes were once thought to be poisonous in Europe, due to their association with the deadly nightshade family.

·         La Tomatina is the World’s biggest food fight where tons of ripe tomatoes are used. This festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain.

There are many varieties of tomatoes, some of the popular varieties are:

1.      Cherry Tomatoes: Small, sweet, and great for salads.

2.      Roma Tomatoes: Also known as plum tomatoes, ideal for sauces.

3.      Beefsteak Tomatoes: Large, juicy, and perfect for slicing.

4.      Heirloom Tomatoes: Varieties that have been passed down through generations, known for their unique flavors and colors.

5.      Tomatoes on the vine:  Large firm tomatoes sold are still attached to the vine and popular for sandwiches, canning and sauces.

6.      Green tomatoes: Tangy and slightly sour green tomatoes are used less compared to other varieties. They impart unique taste and color to the dish when fried and added.
