Prevention – Risk Reduction Strategies
While not all dementias can be prevented, research shows lifestyle changes can lower risk or delay onset:
- Diet: Mediterranean or MIND diet (rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, olive oil)
- Exercise: Regular physical activity improves blood flow and brain health
- Mental stimulation: Reading, puzzles, learning new skills, bilingual activities.
- Social engagement: Staying socially active supports cognitive resilience.
- Quality sleep: Treat sleep apnea, maintain 7–9 hours of rest.
- Manage chronic conditions: Control blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
- Avoid harmful habits: Quit smoking, limit alcohol.
- Check deficiencies: Ensure adequate B12, vitamin D, omega-3s.
- Herbs that help – Gotukola, Brahmi, Turmeric, Ashwagandha and others (click here)
