Ayurveda Ahara India’s Time Honored Food Wisdom

Ayurveda Ahara refers to the concept of food and diet in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India. In Sanskrit, “ahara” means food or nourishment. So, Ayurveda Ahara is not just about what you eat—it’s about how, when, and why you eat, tailored to your individual constitution (prakriti), digestion (agni), and the natural rhythms of nature.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in consultation with the Ministry of Ayush, has released a definitive list of Ayurvedic food preparations under the category of “Ayurveda Aahara.” This significant step brings India’s time-honoured food wisdom into the mainstream, following the introduction of the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations in 2022. These regulations recognise foods based on recipes, ingredients, and processes from authoritative Ayurvedic texts, and the new list brings unprecedented clarity and confidence to consumers and businesses alike.

The list, issued under Note (1) of Schedule B of the regulations, draws directly from classical Ayurvedic texts listed in Schedule A, ensuring the authenticity and traditional basis of these food formulations. This initiative aims to assist Food Business Operators (FBOs) by providing a clear and credible reference for the manufacture of Ayurveda Aahara products.

To facilitate future additions, FSSAI has established a process for FBOs to request inclusion of additional Category A products not yet listed. Such requests need supporting references from authoritative texts in Schedule A. All future updates or changes will be duly notified by the Food Authority.

Notably, Ayurveda Aahara embodies the richness of India’s timeless food culture, rooted in Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest and most holistic systems of health. These food products are crafted in harmony with nature, blending nutrition, balance, and tradition to promote overall well-being. At the inauguration ceremony of World Food India in November 2023, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had said, “India’s sustainable food culture is the result of a journey of thousands of years. Our ancestors had linked Ayurveda with the food style of the common people. Just as international food culture was developed on the initiative of India, Yoga Day took Yoga to every corner of the world, similarly now Millets will also reach every corner of the world.”

Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State (IC), Ministry of Ayush & Minister of State, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, urged citizens to incorporate Ayurveda Aahara into their daily lives to experience its long-term health benefits. He emphasised that these time-tested dietary practices, rooted in India’s traditional wisdom, not only nourish the body but also strengthen immunity, support digestion, and promote overall well-being. “In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, adopting Ayurveda Aahara is a meaningful step toward preventive healthcare and a balanced, sustainable way of living,” added the Union Minister.

Shri Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, stated that the release of the definitive list of Ayurveda Aahara products marks a pivotal step in aligning India’s traditional knowledge systems with modern regulatory frameworks. “This initiative not only empowers Food Business Operators with much-needed clarity but also strengthens consumer trust in Ayurveda-based nutrition,” noted the Secretary.

Prof. Sanjeev Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of National Institute of Ayurveda, deemed to be University (De novo), the nodal Institute for the work, said that the development of the Ayush Aahara Compendium is a significant step in mainstreaming classical Ayurvedic food formulations under a regulated framework. He noted that the NIA, under the guidance of the Ministry of Ayush, has meticulously decoded and curated traditional formulations from authoritative Ayurvedic texts, ensuring scientific and textual validation. This effort, he added, will serve as a guiding document for food manufacturers and help the public access safe, authentic, and time-tested dietary solutions rooted in the principles of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda Aahara refers to food products developed in line with the holistic dietary principles of Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest systems of health and wellness. These preparations emphasise balance, seasonal suitability, and using natural ingredients and herbs known for their therapeutic benefits. With rising public interest in preventive health and sustainable living, Ayurveda Aahara is increasingly recognised as a trusted nutritional choice that harmonises tradition with modern dietary habits.

This initiative marks a pivotal moment in enhancing regulatory clarity for industry stakeholders while promoting the widespread adoption of Ayurveda-based nutrition for better public health outcomes.

HOW TO

  1. In a seated position, ground down into your sitting bones and draw the soles of your feet together. Bring your heels in toward your pelvis and allow the knees to relax out to the sides.
  2. Clasp your fingers around your toes on an inhalation. Begin to engage your core to lift the torso and press your chest forward, allowing your spine to lengthen.
  3. As you exhale, bend forward through the hips while maintaining a long spine, and find your edge.
  4. Inhale and allow your spine to lengthen by lifting out of your torso and drawing your shoulder blades down the back.
  5. Exhale, draw the abdominals in, and dissolve further forward, drawing the chest toward the toes.
  6. Hold this pose for 5-10 slow breaths.
  7. To exit, inhale and elongate the spine while returning to an upright position. Exhale and release the toes, feeling free to extend the knees if needed.

MODIFY OR REPLACE

  • Extend the feet further out in front of you.
  • Utilize blocks under the knees for support, or tuck you mat or blanket under the sitting bones.

SEQUENCING TIPS

Before:

  • Balasana (Child’s pose)
  • Bakasana (Crow pose)
  • Upavistha Konasana A (Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend A)
  • Upavistha Konasana B (Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend B)

After:

  • Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle)
  • Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend)

TEACHING CUES

  • Keep the upper and lower spine lifted through the torso.
  • Bend forward at the hips, drawing your chest toward your feet.
  • If choosing to round the spine, be cautious of the low back and keep extension in the low spine.
  • On each inhalation, feel your chest lift and spine lengthen. On each exhalation, take a deeper forward fold.

VARIATIONS

To deepen the posture, draw the heels toward the body and bend forward to rest the chest onto the feet.

  • Another way to perform this pose is, while sitting in vajrasana, bring both hands in front of you. Turn the palms up and crisscross the hands one above the other and slowly fold the hands above head and bring it back, placing it below the neck- between shoulder blades. Sit in this position for 3 to 5 breaths and release and come back to neutral position.
  • Caution: Do not practice this pose in case you are suffering from severe elbow pain, problem in knee, arthritis, and hernia.

Govt of India promoting use of Biofertilizers in agriculture:

Government of India encourages the use of bio-fertilizers which are economical and eco-friendly source of nutrients and is considered an important component of organic farming and Integrated Nutrient Management.

Biofertilizers are promoted under Paramparagat Krishi Vikash Yojana (PKVY) and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for Northeastern Region (MOVCDNER) schemes. Under PKVY scheme, farmers are provided financial assistance of Rs 15000/ ha for 3 years through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for on-farm and off-farm organic inputs including bio-fertilizer. Under MOVCDNER, financial assistance @ Rs 32500/ ha for 3 years is provided to farmers for off farm /on –farm organic inputs including bio-fertilizer.

National Center of Organic and Natural Farming (NCONF) and its Regional Center of Organic and Natural Farming located at Ghaziabad, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Imphal and Bhubaneswar are organizing various trainings and awareness on organic farming and production and use of organic and bio-fertilizers.

Besides training and awareness, for ensuring quality bio-fertilizers have been notified under Fertilizer Control Order (1985) and their quality standards have been specified which are required to be adhered mandatorily by the manufacturers.

Under PKVY and MOVCDNER Rs. 693.30 Cr. and Rs. 236.78 Cr. respectively have been put in farmers accounts via DBT in last five years, for inputs including biofertilizers.

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has developed efficient strains of biofertilizers specific to different crops and soil types to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers in agricultural production. ICAR recommends integrated use of fertilizers and manures. Biofertilizers, both liquid and powdered form have been developed and promoted under All India Network Project on Soil Biodiversity. Biofertilizers for Phosphorus solubilization, Nitrogen fixation, Potassium and Zinc solubilization suitable for different crops across the country are developed and many of them are commercialized. The ICAR also imparts training on use of bio-fertilizers, organizes front-line demonstrations, awareness programs etc. to educate farmers on all these aspects.

To encourage farmers to use the bio-fertilizers, Government has taken various initiatives such as:

The integrated use of bio-fertilizer, organic fertilizer and organic manure has been made an integral part of package of practices developed by ICAR and State Agriculture Universities.

ICAR has developed liquid bio-fertilizer technology with higher shelf –life and developed improved strains of bio-fertilizers specific to different crops and soil types.

The government is implementing PKVY and MOVCDNER schemes in the country. The financial assistance of Rs. 15000/ ha for 3 years is provided in both the schemes through DBT to ensure that farmers buy organic inputs including bio-fertilizer.
