What Is Hantavirus and Why Is It Dangerous?
The recent viral infection that made headlines is the Hantavirus that started on a cruise ship – MV Hondius. The infection resulted in many deaths. What do we know about Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially life-threatening viral disease that is spread through contact with infected rodents, especially their urine, droppings, or saliva. People can become infected by breathing in contaminated air when cleaning enclosed spaces such as cabins, sheds, or garages where rodents have been present. The illness often begins with flu-like symptoms including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, nausea, and chills, but it can quickly progress to severe breathing problems and lung complications known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS).
Do you know?
The name “Hantavirus” comes from the Hantan River area in South Korea, where the virus was first identified during the 1950s.
Although there is no specific cure for hantavirus infection, early medical treatment and supportive hospital care can improve survival. Preventing rodent infestations, safely cleaning contaminated areas, and practicing good hygiene are important steps to reduce the risk of infection.
