How Can Parents Limit The Use of AI by Children?
Telling a child not to use AI can strain the relationship. Instead of saying “Don’t use AI”, parents should teach children healthy AI habits.
Tell child about the impact of over using AI and how it can impact personalities. Talk about the positive as well as negative impact of using AI. Talk to child on better use of AI.
- Use AI as a helper, not a replacement for people.
- Think for yourself before asking AI.
- Check important information with a teacher, parent or reliable source.
- Never share private information with a chatbot.
- Do not use AI as a replacement for a parent, teacher, mentor, doctor or friend.
- Take regular breaks from screens and spend time doing offline activities.
- Tell a trusted adult if something an AI says makes you frightened, confused, upset or uncomfortable.
The APA also recommends that parents stay curious rather than simply lecture children, use AI together when appropriate, establish technology boundaries collaboratively, and watch for warning signs such as AI replacing friends, sleep or real life activities.
