Don't worry about the people in your past; There's a reason they didn't make it to your future.
Common Allergens in Alcohol

Common Allergens in Alcohol

Common allergens in alcohol are:

  • Histamine: This is present in many alcoholic drinks, particularly red wines, and can cause headache, flushing, nasal symptoms, gut symptoms or asthma.
  • Yeasts: Yeasts are a possible cause of a true allergic reaction to alcoholic drinks.
  • Sulfites/Sulfur Dioxide: Sulfur dioxide is particularly common in home brewed-beers and wines as sodium metabisulphite. Around 1 in 10 asthmatics are sensitive to sulfites and may have a wheezy reaction to alcoholic drinks.
  • Additives: Additives e.g. tartrazine, sodium benzoatecan trigger urticaria and asthma.
  • Plant-Derived Allergens: Grapes, apples, juniper berries, oranges, flavors, malt grain from which the alcohol drink is made can cause allergic reaction. Sometimes you might find fungal spores in the form of mold (which is rare).

Any one of the above substance may cause an allergic-like reaction, and may also be found in your favorite beer. Studies show that alcohol can interfere with the functioning of the immune system, potentially increasing an individual’s sensitivities to other allergens.

Drinking Alcohol on Empty Stomach

Factors To Keep In Mind When Drinking Alcohol

Other factors to keep in mind when drinking alcohol:

  • Congeners: Most alcohol contains smaller amounts of other biologically active compounds, known as congeners, which contribute to the taste, smell, and look of a beverage. Drinks with fewer congeners may lead to less severe hangover symptoms, including nausea, than drinks with more.
  • Medication: Alcohol can be harmful, even in small amounts, when consumed in conjunction with certain medications and/or other drugs.
  • An empty stomach: Eating a substantial meal before drinking alcohol will slow the absorption process. If you are drinking alcohol on an empty stomach, that may increase your chances of feeling unwell.
  • Age: Usually, it takes fewer drinks to become intoxicated as we get older, because as we age, we process alcohol more slowly.

Genetics: Studies suggest genetic factors are associated with a person’s sensitivity to the effects of alcohol, so it’s good to know your family history.

Vasomotor Rhinitis & more

Vasomotor Rhinitis & more

Did you know?

  • The commonest abnormal reaction like flushing, increased heart ate and reduced blood pressure due to genetic impairment in the alcohol metabolism is seen in persons from an oriental background. This is referred as ‘oriental flushing syndrome’. This response is due to increased levels of acetaldehyde in the blood and due to impaired breakdown of alcohol caused by Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) deficiency. Approximately 50% of Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans are deficient in ALDH, and this has been reported to be protective against the development of alcoholism.
  • A white wine will usually contain higher levels of sulfur dioxide than a red wine, and the sweeter the wine the more sulfites it will contain. Someone with a sulfur dioxide allergy will probably experience less of a reaction from a full-bodied red wine than from a white wine because the red has a lower sulfite content.
  • Alcohol triggers Vasomotor Rhinitis -is the medical term for inflammation of the nasal mucosa.
  • In a study conducted the histamine amount was found in the following levels in alcohol beverages:
    • 3-120 micrograms/l – in white wine
    • 15-670 microg/l – in champagnes
    • 60-3800 microg /l – in red wines and
    • 21-305 microg/l – in beers

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis

In extreme situations, alcohol consumption can result in anaphylaxis, a sometimes-lethal condition. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death. It typically causes more than one of the following: an itchy rash, throat or tongue swelling, shortness of breath, difficulty inhaling and exhaling, vomiting, lightheadedness, and low blood pressure. These symptoms typically come on over minutes to hours.

An alcohol allergy can also enhance your odds of an anaphylactic reply to various other triggers, such as foodstuff allergens.

Alcohol Allergy Treatment

Treatment For Alcohol Allergy

If you experience an allergic reaction to alcohol and want to confirm then see a doctor or an allergy specialist. If you have a real alcohol allergy switching from beer to wine or other forms of alcohol will not help you.  Make sure you know what you are experiencing because this can be fatal.

The only method to avoid symptoms of an allergic reaction to alcohol is to refrain from using alcohol. It is better to know which food contains alcohol too. This means paying careful attention to food ingredients, given that items like marinades, tomato purees and several prescription drugs may incorporate alcohol.  If you feel like drinking alcohol, learn to restrain and drink juice or coffee. It is not a bad idea to visit medical professional to get screened for a food or alcohol allergy or alcohol intolerance. In case you are vulnerable to extreme allergic attacks, your physician will likely provide you with epinephrine to inject yourself with in case you start exhibiting signs and symptoms of the malady. It is also advisable to wear a medic alert bracelet and inform family members, work place and friends in the event you have a reaction down the road.

Shaken baby syndrome

Shaken baby syndrome what is it

To parents – this is also known as Abusive Head Trauma. Shaken baby syndrome is a result from violent shaking of the baby that impact the head of an infant. It results in injuries that can lead to permanent neurologic disability or death.

Babies often cry due to hunger or pain or seeking attention. It is natural. If they feel sick also they cry. It is known fact they cannot express with words or gesture. The only way they can express to seek attention is crying. If parents, care takers or baby sitters does not have patience sometimes they knowingly or unknowingly shake baby violently by holding the arms. This causes jerk movement of the head. Apart from this, there are other types of movements that can result in shaken baby syndrome. According to National Center on Shaken baby syndrome, some actions that also could result in the syndrome are:

  • Bouncing baby on knee
  • Tossing baby in the air
  • Jogging or bicycling with baby
  • Sudden stops in a moving vehicle or driving over bumps
  • Fall from furniture or bed
  • Shaking baby’s head

Why shaking baby is dangerous

Sever injury that is result of above mentioned action or violent shaking of children can happen at any age. However, babies are more susceptible as they are more vulnerable for several reasons. Small body of the babies and no resistance for the adult strength is one of the obvious reason.  Their heads are heavy and large proportion of their body size. In addition, their neck has weak muscles and brain is fragile.

Sign and symptom of shaken baby syndrome

  • Decreased appetite, vomiting
  • Bruises on arms and chest
  • Poor sucking or swallowing
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Reduced consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Head and forehead might appear larger due to swelling
  • Inability to lift head
  • Cannot focus eyes
  • Unable to recognize
  • Unequal size of pupils
  • Lethargy and no smile
  • bleeding and swelling in the head and bleeding in the back of the eye

As the child starts growing other signs could be noticeable :Learning and physical disability, Hearing impairment, speech disability, cerebral palsy, visual impairment or blindness, behavioral disorder, cognitive impairment, seizures or death.

How to prevent shaken baby syndrome?

This syndrome is completely preventable. To stop abuse educating those who involved in baby’s development is necessary. Research studies show that in most cases, incessant crying is the primary stimulus is the cause for the frustration of caregivers and they lose control. Counseling new parents, expectant parents regarding babies behavior including crying and teaching parents how to handle crying baby is essential.

Parents and caregivers must know that, it is natural for babies to cry sometimes for no reason 10-15 minutes and it does not lead to any health issues. If they need help in consoling baby they must seek advice from their elders who has experience handling babies.

Try finding a reason for baby’s crying if it is more than half an hour or so. Baby might have tummy pain, fever, hunger, bug bite or look for any visual mark on baby’s body. Sometimes, diverting baby’s attention helps.

Bottom line: while being a parent is blessing, parents also should know that while dealing with babies having patience is critical. Shaking baby can result in fatal injury or permanent brain damage. All babies cry. Understanding and finding reason why baby is crying can help to prevent baby from crying.  Showing anger and abusing baby can only hurt the infant. Gentle rocking, using pacifier, sweet talk, singing or using stroller, exposing baby to nice weather or call pediatrician to stop baby from crying or give little time and baby may sleep and get back to normalcy after a while.

Piggy Bank Savings

Piggy Bank Savings – How to teach kids to save money?

Are we rich? Kids often ask this question. This innocent question can be answered in a way that emphasizes family values such as smart savings and responsible spending. Money does not have to be scary or a taboo.

Naturally, kids wants to buy stuffs – toys, video games, nice cloths, back packs, shoes etc. Nothing wrong in buying stuffs for children.

Buying things whenever they ask will make them feel “I get whatever I want because my parents have money”. Before this attitude goes out of control, teach your child how to save money for the things they want you to buy. This will make them understand the value of money and hard work.

It is important to educate your kids how to save money. Good habits start from an early age.  Teaching your children how to save is an important step to prepare them for financial responsibility and a secure future.

How to teach kids to save money? Here are tips:

1. Once you know what your child wants to save for, figure out how many weeks it will take and make a chart. This helps child to focus on saving each penny.

2. A piggy bank can be a great way to teach your kids the importance of saving, while giving them an easy way to do it. Tell your kids that the goal is to fill up the piggy bank with dollars and coins, until there is no room.

3. Consider rewarding your child for saving his or her money – Give a target and tell your child that if she saves certain amount in a period of time, she will be rewarded with a gift. Something like when you open an account in bank or credit union you get T-shirt, bag or something interesting.

4. One of the best things you can do is let your child see that you save money too. Put money in a jar while your child is watching and tell him or her it’s your savings jar.

5. A “savings match” can be a great way to encourage your child to save extra money

6. Have your child write out a wish list of things he or she wants to spend money on and prioritize that list. Prioritizing helps them to stop buying unnecessary things.

7. Let Your Child Make Mistakes – Allow mistakes. Observe mistakes he makes- then ask him what mistakes he made. This will help to be careful during investments and buying stuffs. Sometimes the best lesson comes from a poor decision, especially when your child is young and the financial loss will not be so great.

8. Play Games – To teach financial concepts play some games.

9. There are a number of games available to teach financial concepts to children. Monopoly and The Game of Life, for example, can teach money management skills as well as the importance of planning ahead.

10. While you don’t want to discuss about your salary in front of your children, definitely talk about your financial plan and how much money needs for a retired life. When you discuss about these important factors, kids will learn to save more.

11. Buy a attractive piggy bank. Use different types of envelops or jars to put money. Encourage your child to open a bank account and deposit money in the account.

12. Teach them to compare the quality and quantity of things – grocery, tools, and appliances. Tell them to do some comparative studies from various stores before buying things. When you are out shopping, show your children how to discern between various prices and explain why buying one item makes better sense than another.

Using above-mentioned tips, you can make your child’s understanding of money fun and accessible. It is an investment in knowledge which truly pays the best interest in the future.
