Dark Circles around eyes and simple remedies
If you get plenty of sleep and still have dark circles under your eyes, that’s not unusual. Fatigue isn’t the only reason for dark circles under your eyes. What appear to be dark circles under your eyes are sometimes just shadows cast by puffy eyelids or hollows under your eyes that develop as a normal part of aging.
Some of the causes for dark circle:
- Allergies
- Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
- Contact dermatitis
- Fatigue
- Heredity — dark under-eye circles can run in families
- Pigmentation irregularities — these are a particular concern for people of color, especially blacks and Asians
- Rubbing or scratching your eyes
- Sun exposure, which prompts your body to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color
- Thinning skin and loss of fat and collagen — common as you age — can make the reddish-blue blood vessels under your eyes more obvious
Some simple home remedies people follow to get rid of dark circles are listed below:
Almond Oil
Almond oil is a great natural ingredient that is very beneficial for the delicate skin around your eyes. Regular usage of almond oil will help fade your under eye circles. In addition to almond oil, you can use vitamin E oil to eliminate dark circles under the eyes. Before going to bed, apply a little almond oil over the dark circles and gently massage it into the skin. Leave it on overnight. The next morning, wash it off with cold water. Follow this remedy daily until the dark circles disappear. Do not use scented almond oil for this purpose.
Potatoes
The starch in potatoes is said to have anti-inflammatory qualities that can help soothe skin and reduce irritation. Peel raw potatoes and then grate and pound into a poultice. Apply to the eyes and leave on for 15 minutes.
Cucumbers
The cucumber slice treatment for dark circles remains a classic because cucumbers contain astringent properties, which shrink blood vessels. They also soothe swollen skin. Slice a cucumber thinly, lie on your back and place a slice over each eye. Keep the cucumber compresses on for at least 15 minutes. Alternatively, grate the cucumber and put the pieces between glean gauze to form a compress.
Rose Water
Rose water has incredible ingredient for skin care. It rejuvenates the skin and has a soothing effect on tired eyes. Due to its mild astringent properties, it also works as a good skin toner.
Soak cotton eye pads in pure rose water for a few minutes. Put the soaked pads on your closed eyelids. Leave them on for about 15 minutes. Follow this remedy twice daily for a few weeks.
Tomato
Tomatoes have bleaching properties that can lighten skin to a great extent. Mix one teaspoon of tomato juice with one-half teaspoon of lemon juice. Gently apply this mixture on the dark circles and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Rinse it off with water. Follow this remedy twice a day for a few weeks. Simply using tomato juice will also work. You can also drink a glass of tomato juice with some mint leaves, lemon juice and salt. For maximum results, be sure to drink this juice immediately after making it. Drink it once or twice a day for about a week.
Lemon Juice
The vitamin C present in lemon juice can also help remove dark circles under the eyes, thanks to its skin-lightening properties. Use a cotton ball to apply fresh lemon juice around your eyes. Leave it on for about 10 minutes and rinse it off. Try this method daily for a few weeks.
Another option is to make a thick paste by mixing one tablespoon of lemon juice, two tablespoons of tomato puree, a pinch of gram flour and turmeric powder. Apply this thick paste gently around your eyes. Rinse it off with clean water after 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat two or three times every week.
Nasal Spray
Some dark circles are actually “allergy shiners”—a condition resembling black eyes caused by nasal congestion. Use an over-the-counter saline nasal spray or making your own by mixing ¼ tsp table salt with two cups warm water. Put the liquid in a nasal spray bottle or neti pot.
Tea Bags
The tannin in the tea reduces any swelling and the appearance of dark circles caused by lack of sleep, while the moisture from the bags is absorbed into the eyes, rehydrating and reviving them. Use green tea or black tea. Brew the tea bags as you would normally and allow the bags to cool or place them in the refrigerator. Lie down, place a tea bag over each eye, and leave in place for about 15 minutes.
Cold Compress
An ice-cold compress placed over your eyes helps constrict the blood vessels, which may be causing your dark circles. Good choices include a bag of frozen peas or two chilled teaspoons. Lay down with your head propped by pillows and place the compressor over your eyes. Rest for at least 10 minutes and gently pat your eyes dry.
Get Your Rest, Sleep well
Lack of sleep can make your skin appear paler, which allows blood vessels to be more visible through the skin, giving the appearance of bluish or dark circles. So make sure that you are getting in at least 7-8 hours of undisturbed sleep!
Eat Healthy
At the end of the day, you are what you eat. The healthier you eat, the better your skin is going to look. For dark circles, you need a healthy dose of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K iron and folic acid. So gorge on citrus fruits, berries, green leafy veggies, nuts, whole grains, avocado, seafood, beef, cheese, green tea etc. and do away with processed and greasy foods.
