There has been a significant increase in cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis -sometimes called “brain-eating amoeba” infection- in Kerala, India, with many cases and a number of deaths reported.

Kerala has issued an alert for a brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria fowleri. So far, four deaths have been reported from the state. This brain eating amoeba can cause a rare but often fatal brain infection called Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM)
