Purple revolution

Purple Revolution In Kashmir Valley As Farmers Focus on Lavender Farming

Lavender cultivation is gaining momentum in North State of Jammu and Kashmir, India. India celebrated National startup day on January 16th. On this occasion, Union Ministry of Science & Technology  through the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research’s (CSIR) Aroma Mission launched The Purple Revolution Also known as Lavender Revolution in Jammu and Kashmir state.

Focus of this mission is to take advantage of the geographical conditions and to increase the homegrown market along with farmers income. In recent years this state is facing drought condition and farmers turned to lavender to beat the drought replacing maize with lavender.

Lavender designated as Doda brand product, Doda is the birthplace of India’s Purple Revolution (Aroma Mission), says Dr Jitendra Singh while chairing the District Development Coordination & Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meetings of districts Doda and Kishtwar respectively. And lavender can be promoted under ‘One District, One Product’ initiative of the Modi Government to attract Agri- StartUps, entrepreneurs, and farmers.

Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular aromatic oil in aroma industry. The demand for this aromatic oil is high in India and worldwide. It is used in potpourri, sachets, floral arrangements, cosmetics, hydrosol, soaps, baby products and room fresheners.

The Aroma mission helps to improve farmers livelihood and doubling their income. CSIR introduced high -value essential oil-bearing lavender crop through Indian Institute of Integrative Medicines (IIIM) in Kishtwar, Rajouri and Doda districts. After introducing the aromatic saplings Lavender cultivation is practiced in many districts of J & K. Farmers are also provided with distillation units and trained to extract the oil. This is helping farmers to grow lavender as well as sell the products. Now many farmers have become entrepreneurs in lavender oil production.  Now the crop is also introduced in Ramban, Pulwama and other neighboring districts. Within few years of time, Aroma mission has become popular and lavender farming became a popular option for Agricultural Startups in this region.

The cultivation of one of the most popular essentials oil crop has generated rural employment, spurred entrepreneurship and farmers showed interest in getting to know aromatic products manufacturing. Their enthusiasm resulted in lowering the import of essential and aromatic oils!

Bharat Bhushan is one of the farmers who made huge profit within two years of growing this essential oil crop. Says Bhushan “ Lavender, a drought resistant crop can be grown on poor soil and likes lots of sun but needs little water. I started lavender farming in 2010 with encouragement of IIIM, Jammu. It is easy to grow and does not need much irrigation and cow dung manure is used. Seeing my success many followed suit and many farmers have become part of self-help groups are engaged in this occupation. I have two nurseries that sell lavender sapling for propagation”.

After seeing the profits nearly 500 farmers who were suffering from drought condition and could not cultivate maize now switched to grow lavender perennial crop. Another advantage of growing lavender is, women who could not leave village for jobs are employed in these fields and distilleries. This profitable crop made many women self-reliant in the area.

In India, with CSIR’s Aroma mission, medicinal and aromatic plants are being cultivated in 6000 hectares of land. It has generated nearly 12 lakh employment and Rs. 60 crores worth of essential oil being produced in past two years.  Farmers are making profits and have improved their lifestyle by cultivating and producing lavender essential oil.

CSIR’s Aroma mission was launched in  2016 is encouraging and helping those farmers whose livelihoods affected by the climate change to grow profitable crops such as lavender, rosemary and lemongrass, and medicinal plants such as ashwagandha. It provides cuttings, helps in setting up distillation units for clusters of 50 farmers, tests oil quality and helps find buyers. Through Aroma mission’s Phase II Purple revolution so far, more than 44,000 people are trained and throughout India CSIR helped to cultivate 6000 hectares land. Government is also planning to introduce other aromatic and medicinal cash crops in J&K.

Remedies for premature hair greying

Home Remedies for Premature Graying of Hair

Premature graying of hair is a condition that affects millions of people. For some people it does not bother but for many it is a great deal for various reasons. Hair growth depends on how we take care of them and how we nurture our body.

Reasons for premature graying of hair:

Nourishment of hair depends on the nutrients that are carried to scalp by blood stream. Sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands in the scalp is responsible for hair color and health. The two primary causes for premature gray hair are: Improper diet and stress. Other reasons are lack of important nutrients such as Vitamin B, copper, iodine, iron in our diet.

Our negative emotions – anxiety, worries, stress, anger, fear have adverse affect on hair health. People who go through lot of stress will end up in hair loss or premature graying of hair. The negative impact on mind effects body and it interferes in supply of nutrients.

Improper hair care, using too much hair dryer, washing hair too often and using hot water to wash hair, chronic conditions including constipation and hereditary are other reasons for premature gray hair. Using hair dye at young age can alter the chemical nature and interfere with hair protein structure causing gray hair.

Home remedies of premature hair graying:

Indian gooseberry:

  1. Use shampoos that contain Indian gooseberry (amla) for washing hair. It helps to rejuvenate hair follicles and promotes pigmentation.
  2. A mixture of coconut oil and amla powder can be applied overnight to hair and wash in the morning.
  3. Boil amla pieces in coconut or sesame oil and apply the oil to hair to stop greying.
  4. Massage scalp in amla soaked water once or twice a week while washing hair.
  5. Mix amla juice with almond oil and few drops of lime juice and apply on the scalp. Leave it overnight and wash hair in the morning.

Henna:

  1. Applying henna once in two weeks or once a month will help hair to grow and will retains pigmentation.
  2. Mix henna powder, amla powder, lemon juice, beetroot juice and black tea to prepare a paste. Apply on hair to get pigmentation and good hair.
  3. Boil henna leaves in coconut oil, let the oil turn dark. Apply this oil on hair and massage. Leave it overnight and wash hair next day morning.
  4. Prepare henna paste with coconut oil and lemon juice. Apply this paste on hair, leave it for couple of hours and wash hair using warm water.

Castor oil:

Castor oil is good for hair growth as well as to retain the dark color of the hair. Warm castor oil a little, apply on hair and scalp. Massage scalp nicely. Leave it overnight and wash hair next day.

Curry leaves:

  1. Including more curry leaves in diet prevents premature graying of hair. It helps to grow hair with newer pigmentation.
  2. Boil curry leaves in sesame oil or coconut oil and apply this oil once a week on hair and scalp. Either you can wash hair next day using warm water or leave it till you wash your hair next time.

Clarified butter: Also known as ghee, applying this will help to control hair fall as well as pigmentation change in hair. Massage hair scalp using ghee.

Onion juice: Minimum once a week apply onion juice on to scalp and leave it for half an hour and wash. Onion juice provides sulfur that helps to regrow hair with new pigmentation. Sulfur is also present in keratin of hair. Added sulfur in onion makes hair root strong. Antioxidant present in onion juice reduces natural buildup of hydrogen peroxide which is responsible for gray hair. Onion juice is also helpful in getting rid of dandruff because of its antibacterial property

Diet: Include Vitamin B (B12), Vitamin D, Vitamin A and E,  Iron rich food in your diet. Food rich in these nutrients are essential to stop premature graying of hair. Fruits like banana, fig, blueberries and vegetables like carrot, amaranth, onion, spinach – are good for hair. Drinking buttermilk or consuming yogurt is good for gut. A healthy gut supplies healthy nutrients to scalp and hair.

Hair care:

  1. If you are regularly bleaching hair, stop it immediately. Bleaching damages hair root.
  2. Do not use harsh shampoos and conditioners. Get familiar with pH and hardness of the water at your home. Accordingly select your shampoo and conditioner.
  3. Do not apply much heat while curling or while using hair dryer.
  4. If the Sun is too hot, use umbrella or a cap to protect hair from drying and color change.
  5. Do not wash hair too frequently.
  6. Stop smoking immediately.

Meditation, yoga and Pilates: Practicing breathing, regular meditation, yoga and Pilates helps to release the stress from mind and body. A relaxed mind helps to balance the hormones that promotes hair growth with good dark pigmentation.

Premature hair graying is a common problem. If the reasons for hair greying is not hereditary, then one should be able to fix it using suitable remedies.  If you cannot fix the problem, then contact your doctor.

Detoxifying Psolas muscle

Practicing These Three Yoga Poses Helps To Detoxify And Relaxing Psoas Muscle

Psoas is the deepest core muscle situated one on each side of the body. These muscles called psoas  major are the ones that attaches upper body to lower body. These muscles connects spine to legs. Psoas (psoai-plu) muscle are important in all terms – energetically, physically, and emotionally. Any stress that we experience can cause pain in posas muscle and hurts back. Yogis often detoxify these muscles to keep system calm.

Posas influence healthy and balanced posture of body. It influences how we walk, sit, move and even our breathing because our diaphragm is linked to psoas too.

Posas are often referred as Yogic muscles because any tension and stress that we carry if we must detoxify then it can be done by releasing psoas. Similarly, our body balance depends on psoas. Any tightness in psoas can cause difficulty in focusing, irritability, fatigue, and insomnia. There are few yoga poses when practiced daily will help to detoxify and strengthen the core psoas muscle.

How to release tension, tightness from psoas muscle and improve core strength?

Knee to chest pose: Also known as apanasana, this pose helps to soften the core muscle.

  • From traditional rest pose on the mat, gently bring your right knee towards chest.
  • Keep your pelvis neutral and lumbar in natural curve position.
  • While holding right knee to chest, slowly walk your left foot forward away from hips. Extend the leg and bring your attention to left hip. If you feel tension stop and release the tension.
  • Stay here for few breaths.
  • Then bend the left knee and repeat this on the right leg.
  • Practice this few time, slowly on both sides for 5-7 breaths. You will start noticing that your body is relaxing.
  • Stretches and stabilizes the pelvis and low back and can reduce lower back pain. Reduces excessive anger, excitement, anxiety and high blood pressure.

Low lunge pose: Anjaneyasana pose is another pose that releases tension in psoas muscle.

  • Start with tabletop pose by keeping hands and knees on the mat.
  • Keep extra cushion if your knee bothers you to be on the floor.
  • Step your left foot forward while aligning the ankle directly under the knee.
  • Keep both palms on top of left knee and press down into the thigh. This lifts the core. Don’t  forget to tuck your tail bone under by softening the front of right hip
  • Slowly bring both arms above heat, stay in this pose for few breaths.
  • Bring down the hands and knees back into tabletop pose.
  • Repeat the steps on right side.
  • After completion of the pose, go to child pose for resting.

Reclined butterfly pose –Supta Baddhakonasana is a powerful pose to detoxify and release tension in core muscle. There are three ways to strengthen core by practicing reclined butterfly pose.

To release tension and stretch the psoas:

  • Exhale and slowly lie down on the mat on your back
  • Bend both knees and press the sole of the feet together.
  • Let both knees fall apart on sides, spread the back of your pelvis on the mat. Do not try to push the knees on the floor as it could harden and hurt muscles around groin.
  • Release  lower back and upper buttocks through your tailbone.
  • Stay in this pose for five to ten breaths

To increase core strength: While on reclined butterfly pose:

  • Slowly lift both knees about an inch while your soles of the feet are still together. Hold it for one minute and release.
  • Next time lift knees another one inch and hold for a minute. Continue breathing.
  • You will experience shaking in legs and it is natural
  • Release and repeat this for few more breaths.

To strengthen the core muscle:

  • While in reclined butterfly pose, lift your pelvis from the floor about half an inch (you can test it by moving your palm underneath). Let your soles of the feet continue to press each other tight.
  • Hold the pose for five breaths and release pelvis to the floor.

These three poses are helpful in detoxifying the body. Practicing these poses  not only help strengthening core muscle also eases stress, reduces depression, will have calming and relaxing effect.
