Vanilla Ice cream – Is it natural flavor?

You might see “Natural flavor” vanilla ice cream on shelf and want to buy. Stop there if you are vegan or vegetarian.

It contains something called castoreum a fragrant, brown slime that beavers (castor sacs of anal glands!) use to mark their territory. It gives musky vanilla scent that is used by food specialist.

As per FDA it is not required to list this ingredient in the list as it is harmless. This ingredient might be present in strawberry, raspberry ice cream too!

It is also used in alcoholic beverages, baked goods, pudding, soft candy, hard candy, many chewing gums.

Your option? Look at ingredients. Vanilla ice-cream should contain “vanillin” Vanilla or vanilla extract and not natural flavor – castoreum.
