Perfluoroalkyl chemicals or PFCs

Perfluroalkyl chemicals are large group of compounds that are widely used in stains, grease, food packaging and everyday products like water bottles. It is used to keep food from sticking to cookware, furniture resistance to stains, waterproof clothes, firefighting materials etc.

PFCs as commonly called, these chemicals breakdown slowly in the environment and categorized to be persistent by NIEHS and NTP (National Toxicology program).

A form of PFCs called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perflourooctane sulfonate (PFOS).  These are byproduct of commercial products and are released into environment. PFOA is banned in many countries.

Human and wild life health suffer because of these compounds. It is known to reduce birth weight, birth disorder, reduces immune system function and causes infertility in both men and women and weight gain.

It also has negative impact on liver and kidney functions. Lab tests have caused tumors in animals. Another consistent finding from human epidemiology studies is that, it also known to increase cholesterol level  by reducing metabolic rate!

It is present in Food packages, household products, electronics manufacturing units, drinking water lpurifying facility – landfill, wastewater management etc, and in living organisms such as fish and other aquatic animals.
