Stigma has a harmful effect on people living with HIV and the HIV epidemic. The impact on the physical and mental well-being of people living with HIV can be significant; experiences of direct discrimination are common and stigma is linked to poorer adherence to treatment and treatment outcomes. HIV prevention is also dramatically hindered by stigma.
